CHAPTER 27

My knees were weak when I left Susan’s room at the Chateau General Hospital. Although she was still weak and her speech was broken because of her injuries, her message was clear: “Get Gracie back and kill every last one of them!”

My greatest fear was losing Grace. My next greatest fear was letting Susan down. She was counting on me to fix this. Grace was out there somewhere counting on me to get her back, to keep her safe. She might not realize it in those terms because of her young brain, but she expected Susan and me to show up at any moment and take her back home. She didn’t know what was happening, but she knew it wasn’t normal.

I glanced around the intensive care unit, nodding to one of the SWAT officers when we made eye contact. “Do you know which room Baylor’s in?”

He indicated the room opposite the nurse’s station. I thanked him and headed in that direction. The large glass door was closed, but the curtain was cracked. The instruments were lit up, which enabled me to see inside the room. A nurse with red hair and light blue scrubs was jotting down some notes. I knocked lightly on the glass. She took one look at me and frowned.

I glanced down at my dirty jeans and hoodie. I was wearing a pistol, but my badge was concealed under my shirt. I lifted my shirt and she relaxed, waved me in.

“I work with him,” I explained in a low voice. “He doesn’t have any family in town—”

“The last I checked,” Baylor called in a weak voice, “you’re my family.”

I smiled and stepped closer. He opened his tired eyes and turned his head. “Did you get Gracie back?”

I shuffled my feet and shoved my hands in my pockets. “I’m still working on it.”

“I’m real sorry I couldn’t stop them.” Baylor’s brown eyes were sorrowful. “I was afraid to hit her, so I didn’t chance a shot.”

“You risked your life for my daughter. For that, I’m eternally grateful.” I let out a tired sigh. “A lot of officers risked their lives for my family tonight. I’m just sorry you got hurt. I also feel terrible that Dalton and Junior lost their lives. It all seems so senseless. I don’t know what they want with Gracie or what they want with me.”

“Do you think they want money?”

“I don’t know. I haven’t received a ransom demand yet.” We were keeping our voices low, but I turned a suspicious eye toward the nurse. I remembered what the kidnapper had said about having a nurse float an air bubble into Susan’s vein. I leaned close to Baylor. “Keep an eye on the nurses and doctors who come by your room. The kidnapper said he’s got people everywhere. He might be blowing smoke, but we can’t take this crew for granted. They’ve already demonstrated a total disregard for life.”

Baylor nodded. He glanced down at his bandages and then across the room toward the nurse.
